The story
Kai kicked a pebble across his backyard. The sun was almost gone. He was bored. Then a strange BREEZE moved across the grass — and the air smelled, just for a second, like a place he had never been.
Kai stopped. There was a STICK in the grass. Just a plain stick. But it had NOT been there a moment ago. He was certain. And — was it… glowing? Just a little? At the tip?
He touched it. A BURST of blue light. When Kai could see again — the stick was a SWORD in his hand. Silver armor was flowing over his hoodie like running water. He stared at his reflection in the glowing blade. "Whoa."
A tall PORTAL of blue light opened beside the swing set. Out stepped a young woman in green armor, a longsword strapped to her back. Her eyes were calm and very bright.
"I am Princess Serraya of Texarnia," she said. "Orcs are at our walls. Only the one chosen by the Sword can stop their warlord. The Sword has chosen YOU, Kai. Come with me — or stay. The choice is yours."
The portal hummed. Serraya waited, her hand still out. Kai could feel the weight of the Sword. He could also feel the wind from home. What did he do?
What happens next?
- Step through the portal with Serraya.
- "I... I can't. Not yet." Stay home.
Kai stepped through. The portal sealed behind him with a sound like a thousand silver bells. He stood on a cliff above a sleeping kingdom. "TEXARNIA," Serraya said. "And there — at the gate — are the orcs."
They ran along the walls. Below them — thousands of orcs. At the center, taller than any of them, stood KARAG. His cleaver was as long as a horse. Kai's hand tightened on the Sword.
"There are two ways down, knight," Serraya said. "We can charge straight at the gate and meet them like a storm. Or we can rappel down the cliff and free the villagers Karag has caged behind his lines. How will we begin?"
What happens next?
- Charge from the gate! Hit them like a storm.
- Rappel down. Free the villagers from behind.
Kai LEAPT from the gate. The Sword sang as he fell. He landed in the middle of the orc line — blue light EXPLODED outward — and the orcs scattered, eyes wide. "Who IS this?" one growled. Kai stood up tall.
Kai rappelled down the cliff in silence. Behind the orc camp, he found a cage. Inside — old women, a baker, two children, a man with a kind face. "You came," whispered the man. Kai cut the lock with one careful stroke.
A massive orc LIEUTENANT stepped into Kai's path. He was twice Kai's size. His axe dragged a scar in the dirt. Karag was waiting beyond him. Kai had to decide — fight, or slip past?
What happens next?
- Face him head-on. Honor demands it.
- Slip past him — Karag is the real fight.
The lieutenant SWUNG. Kai ducked low and brought the Sword up — a single ringing CLANG — and the axe flew from the orc's hands. The lieutenant stared. Then he turned, and he RAN.
Kai pressed himself against the wall. He held his breath. The lieutenant lumbered past, GROWLING at the dark. Kai slipped behind him like a shadow. The Sword was silent. He kept moving.
"I... I can't. Not yet." Kai turned and ran inside. The portal closed behind him. His mom called him for dinner like nothing had happened. He hid the Sword — still glowing — in his closet.
Kai lay in bed. The plastic stars on his ceiling glowed soft green. He thought about Serraya. He thought about the wall. He thought about the kid he could have been. His eyes closed.
"You can still help," a voice said. Kai opened his eyes. Serraya stood at the foot of his bed — but TRANSPARENT, soft, like she was made of dream-light. "Come dream-walking with me," she whispered, and held out her hand.
Kai took her hand. The bedroom MELTED — walls dripping into mist — and the next thing he knew, he was standing in Texarnia again. The sky had TWO MOONS. The castles floated. The Sword was in his hand. He was the Knight again.
"To understand a kingdom, you must SEE it," Serraya said. "Climb the mountain — and you will see what is at stake. Walk down to the village — and you will meet the ones you fight for. Which way, knight?"
What happens next?
- Climb the mountain. See what's at stake.
- Go to the village. Meet the people.
They climbed. At the peak, Kai SAW it — the whole kingdom spread below: rivers like silver threads, towers gleaming, and beyond, the dark orc tide closing in. "This is what you defend," Serraya said. Kai gripped the Sword tighter.
They walked into the village. Dream-people gathered around him — a girl with a kite, an old grandfather, a baker holding bread. A small boy pressed a smooth wooden TOKEN into Kai's palm. "For when you're scared," he whispered.
Serraya began to FADE. Dawn was breaking in the real world. "I cannot stay much longer, Kai. Wake now — and cross for real. Or linger with me a moment more — and I will teach you one last thing."
What happens next?
- Wake up NOW. Cross for real.
- Stay a moment. Learn one more thing.
Kai snapped awake. The Sword was REAL in his hand. The closet was open. Sunlight poured through his window. He had crossed in his heart already — now his feet had to follow.
"One last lesson," Serraya whispered. She showed Kai a single MOVE — sword raised high, then plunged DOWN to the earth. "When you must stop a war without killing — this is how." Then she was gone. Kai woke. The Sword was brighter.
Kai stood up in his bedroom. The Sword PULSED. And — beside his bed — a REAL portal opened. Not a dream this time. A door of blue light. Texarnia was on the other side. He stepped through.
He stepped out onto the field of Texarnia. The sky was real. The wind was real. Serraya was waiting for him. "You came," she said. "Karag is just ahead." Kai nodded. He was ready.
They walked together across the smoking field. The orcs PARTED. And there — at the center — stood Karag. Cleaver raised. Eyes glowing. Waiting. The Sword in Kai's hand had never felt so heavy. Or so right.
Karag spoke first. "Little knight. You came." Kai felt the Sword pull him forward. He had two ways to end this. Steel against steel — sword to sword. Or the Sword PLANTED in the earth — its magic spreading like sunlight, stopping every blade in the field. Which way would Kai choose?
What happens next?
- Sword to sword. He chose this fight.
- Plant the Sword. Stop the war without a blow.
Kai CHARGED. The Sword met the cleaver in a shower of blue and red sparks. CLANG. CLANG. CLANG. Three strikes. On the third, the Sword caught the cleaver and TORE it from Karag's hands. The warlord stared at his empty fists. Then he knelt.
Kai raised the Sword high — and DROVE it down into the earth. A wave of blue light rolled out across the field. Every orc weapon FELL. Karag's cleaver dropped from his hands. The warlord stared at his empty palms. The wind went quiet.
Dawn broke over Texarnia. The orcs were already SCATTERING into the hills. Karag turned without a word and walked into the rising sun. He never looked back. The siege was over. The kingdom was safe.
Serraya turned to Kai. "You have saved Texarnia, knight of two worlds." She placed a hand on his shoulder. "But you must choose now what kind of knight you will be. Will you go home — and STAY home as a hero? Or go home — and come back to us in your dreams, every night, forever?"
Kai thought of his mom calling him for dinner. He thought of the kids at his school. He thought of Texarnia, of Serraya, of the kid in the village who gave him the token. Two paths. Both right. He had to choose.
What happens next?
- Go home with the Sword. Be a hero in MY world.
- Go home — but come back in dreams. Forever.
Kai was home before dinner. Nobody knew. But — when a kid at school needed help against a bully, Kai gripped the stick in his pocket. It became the Sword. The armor flowed over his hoodie. The bully ran. Knight Kai grinned. The stick was a sword. The boy was a knight. And both worlds were waiting.
Kai was home before dinner. The Sword vanished. Nobody knew. But every night, when he closed his eyes — he was THERE. Walking the moonlit walls of Texarnia beside Serraya. The stick was a sword. The boy was a knight. And every night, the dream was waiting.
