The story
Forty days. Captain Marta had counted forty mornings since the orcs surrounded Vienna. The city was tired. The arrows were almost gone. A small child tugged her coat. "Captain Marta… is anyone coming to save us?"
Outside the walls, Grok the orc warlord paced through his muddy camp. He jabbed his big club at the sky. "TODAY!" he bellowed. "Today we BREAK that gate. The food, the gold, the city — ALL OURS!"
Far away, through dark forests, a thousand hooves drummed the earth. Stefan, King of the Winged Hussars, rode at the front. His red cloak streamed behind him. "Faster!" he called. "Vienna does not have another sunset."
At sunrise, Stefan crested a hill — and stopped. There, in the valley below, was Vienna. Ringed by orc tents. Smoke rising from her walls. A young hussar whispered, "By the stars." Stefan said nothing for a long, long moment.
Stefan called his captains close. "We have minutes, not hours. The orcs have not seen us. From this hill, three paths lead down." He looked at each of them in turn. "And only one of them can be ours."
Stefan looked at his hussars. He looked at the rising sun. He had three good ideas — but only time for one. How would the Winged Hussars arrive?
What happens next?
- Climb to Eagle Hill — charge from above.
- Ride straight at the battering ram!
- Save the people fleeing from the west.
The hussars climbed the great hill that loomed above the orc camp. From the summit they could see EVERYTHING — every tent, every cooking fire, Grok pacing like an ant. The hussars unfolded their wings. The morning wind began to sing through the feathers.
Stefan's youngest hussar tugged his reins. "My king — should we signal Vienna first so Marta's soldiers know we're here? Or should surprise be our weapon?"
What happens next?
- Signal Vienna first. We charge together.
- Surprise is the weapon. We go NOW.
A hussar fired a single arrow trailing a bright red ribbon. It arced over the orc camp toward Vienna. On the wall, Marta caught the flash of red and GASPED. She seized her brass horn and blew it long and loud. The orcs spun to face the city — and that was when the hill erupted.
The hussars poured down the hill in absolute silence. Then the wind caught the wings. The whistling built, and built, and then SCREAMED like a thousand eagles diving from the sky. Grok turned, his mouth wide open. Too late.
Mid-charge, halfway down the slope, Stefan saw Grok scrambling to rally his orcs into a defensive line. The orc warlord still had his huge club. Stefan had to choose what to aim for.
What happens next?
- Aim for Grok. Cut off the head!
- Aim for the battering ram. Smash their tools!
Stefan rode straight at Grok. The orc warlord took ONE look at the wings, dropped his club, and BOLTED. The whole horde saw their leader flee and panicked. They scattered into the woods, leaving everything behind. Vienna's gates creaked open. Marta walked out and met Stefan in the middle of the field. She didn't salute. She just said, "Thank you." Stefan smiled. "And the Winged Hussars arrived." THE PATIENT CHARGE.
The hussars wheeled hard and SMASHED into the battering ram. Wood splintered everywhere. The orcs, with nothing left to fight WITH, scattered into the hills. Stefan rode to the city gate. Marta opened it from the inside. She was covered in soot. He was covered in dust. They both smiled. The walls were whole. "And the Winged Hussars arrived." THE PATIENT CHARGE.
Stefan didn't wait. He led the hussars at full gallop, straight toward the battering ram at Vienna's gate. Wings unfurled mid-ride. The whistling rose. The orcs at the ram looked up — and FROZE. The ram was already pressed against the gate. One more swing, and the city would have broken.
Up on the wall, Marta saw the wings coming. She fired arrows past the hussars to slow more orcs running from the camp. She shouted down, "Stefan! There's more of them — coming from the camp!"
What happens next?
- Hussars, SPLIT! One wing on the ram, one on the camp!
- Together. Crush the ram crew first.
Half the hussars wheeled away to meet the second wave. Stefan's half struck the ram crew. The orcs broke and ran — but as they fled, they SHOVED the giant battering ram sideways. It tipped, it crashed, and it SLAMMED into the wall beside the gate. A whole section caved in with a roar of dust.
The full force of the wings hit the ram crew at once. The orcs dropped everything and ran. But while every hussar was focused on the front, the second orc wave reached the WEST wall. Grok himself smashed it with his club, again and again. A different section cracked open.
The orcs were routing. Grok was screaming retreat. The siege was broken. But there was a hole in the wall now. What should Stefan do RIGHT NOW?
What happens next?
- Chase Grok all the way to the mountains!
- Let him run. Start rebuilding tonight.
The Winged Hussars chased Grok's army for three days. Over rivers. Over mountains. The orcs ran and ran and never came back to this land. When Stefan returned at dawn, the broken wall was already half-rebuilt. Every villager carried stones. Marta walked over and handed him a stone too. He placed it on the wall himself. "And the Winged Hussars arrived." THE BOLD CHARGE.
Stefan dismounted the moment the last orc disappeared. By sunset, he and the people of Vienna were shoulder-to-shoulder, passing stones up a human chain. Stefan's red cloak was smeared with mortar dust. Marta worked beside him. Neither said much. The wall rose stone by stone in the golden light. "And the Winged Hussars arrived." THE BOLD CHARGE.
The hussars wheeled toward the west side of Vienna. There — a small panicked stream of villagers had slipped out a back gate. Old people. Children. A baker pushing a wheelbarrow. A handful of orc raiders were closing in on them. A little girl tripped, and her wooden doll tumbled into the grass.
Stefan had only moments to choose how to save them. His captains looked to him. The orc raiders were almost within arm's reach.
What happens next?
- Charge STRAIGHT between the raiders and the villagers!
- Loop around — cut the raiders off from behind!
The hussars charged STRAIGHT between the raiders and the villagers. The orcs took one look at the wings — and BOLTED. Stefan scooped up the little girl, doll and all, and set her on Wind's saddle. She held the white mane like she was born to it. The villagers reached the safety of the woods.
The hussars looped wide and FAST, coming up behind the orc raiders. The orcs heard the whistling behind them, panicked, and ran in every direction. The villagers were already running toward the woods. Stefan reined Wind to a stop beside the little girl, picked up her doll, and pressed it into her hands.
Every villager was safe in the woods. But from the hill above the fields, the hussars could see the orcs at the river — loading wagons heavy with Vienna's stored grain. The food meant for winter. Marta arrived, breathless. "My king. The winter is long."
What happens next?
- Ride after the wagons. Save SOME of the food!
- Let them have it. We can grow more food.
The hussars galloped down to the river. The orcs took one look at the wings and dropped the reins. The hussars saved half the wagons. Half the food. As they rode back, Stefan saw the orcs flee with the other half on their shoulders. Half is more than nothing, he thought. Marta met him at the gate. "Half is everything to whoever you saved." "And the Winged Hussars arrived." THE KIND CHARGE.
Stefan watched from the hill as the orcs loaded the carts and lumbered away. He did not move. Marta looked up at him. "My king?" He said it quietly. "Let them eat. They were hungry too." The villagers, gathered around him, looked at each other — and then nodded. That winter would be hard. But every single face, in every single doorway, was alive. "And the Winged Hussars arrived." THE KIND CHARGE.
